| Zohar Fresco : | |
At a very early age he started playing percussion, absorbing the rich and diverse traditional music that surrounded him, especially from much older musicians who came to Israel from Asia and various countries in the Middle East. In his youth, he was influenced by the musical revolution of the 80's in Israel, years of evolution and innovation in the Israeli music, where the integration between elements from east west was growing fast. During his musical journey, Zohar was a member and co-founder "Bustan Abraham" - an ensemble in which both Arab and Jewish musicians collaborated. The acoustic band, that specialized in fusing eastern and western styles, was a pioneer in its field and is still considered one of the best the genre has produced. Zohar recorded five albums with "Bustan Abraham", and toured Israel and around the world. He played also in "Ziriab" - an ensemble of classical Turkish Arab music, under the artistic supervision of the oud player Teisir Elias. In addition, Zohar performed and recorded with Israel's best artists: Eti Ankri, Beri Sacharov, Shem Tov Levi, Ahuva Ozeri, Yirmi Kaplan, David Broza, Arik Einstein, and many others. In 1994, Zohar started a creative and exciting collaboration with Achinoam Nini (Noa). He has recorded drums and percussion on all her Israeli and International albums, and toured extensively with her various musical ensembles (from acoustic trio to full symphony orchestra), throughout the world, including Europe and North America's most prestigious venues and festivals. He has also toured separately with Noa's musical producer and guitarist Gil Dor, where he played Gil's compositions as well as his own. The unique professional and personal relationship with Noa and Gil Dor remains strong and fruitful to this day. In time, Zohar developed his own personal and inimitable style on Hand Drums, Tof Miriam, Frame drums, Darbuka and more), and has slowly become a well known and highly respected artist on the international percussion scene. He has played and performed with Glen Velez, Zakir Hussian, Ahmet Misirli, Philip Glass, Ross Daly, Arto Tuncboyaciyan and others. Zohar has played in soundtracks of movies from Israel and around the world, including "Kikar Hahalomot" , "The Fifth Element", "Beautiful Country" and more. He recently took part in the recording of the new album of the "Solis String Quartet" from Naples, Italy. Zohar is a partner in the project "The Time" together with the pianist Leszek Mozdzer and the contrabass-player Lars Danielsson. He is also the artistic manager of the percussion instruments festival - "Peimot" that takes place every year in the "Confederation House" in Jerusalem. Zohar taught at the "Academy of Music" in Jerusalem, instructs various workshops, and teaches numerous private students who admire him greatly. He is currently working on writing, producing and recording his first solo project. |
